Assessment guide

What the Entrance Assessment involves

The SEAG Entrance Assessment is the standardised test used by academically selective (grammar) post-primary schools in Northern Ireland. Here's a plain-English overview:

  • Format: pupils sit two assessment papers on separate dates, each covering English and Maths.
  • Content: Maths draws on the primary curriculum (number, calculation, fractions, measures, shape, and data), while English covers comprehension, vocabulary, spelling, punctuation and grammar.
  • Scoring: results are reported as a standardised score that is adjusted for the pupil's age, so younger and older children in the year group are treated fairly.
  • Cost: there is a registration fee, with a waiver available for families entitled to Free School Meals (FSME).
  • Results: scores are shared with families in January and are used as part of post-primary school applications.

TransferNI mirrors this structure so your child practises exactly the kinds of questions they'll meet on the day.

How to prepare effectively

Good preparation is steady and low-pressure. A few short sessions a week beats long cramming sessions. We recommend combining official and online practice:

  • Official practice papers: download SEAG's free practice papers, answer sheets and parent's guide from the official website to see the true paper format.
  • Everyday practice with TransferNI: use topic-by-topic questions to build knowledge, then move on to timed mock tests to build exam stamina.
  • Review mistakes together: the biggest gains come from understanding why an answer was wrong — TransferNI gives worked explanations for every question.
  • Build a routine early: starting in P6 keeps sessions short and calm rather than rushed in P7.

Access arrangements

Support for additional needs

Access arrangements are adjustments that allow pupils with a disability, medical condition or special educational need to sit the assessment fairly — for example, extra time, rest breaks, or a modified paper.

  • Requests are made during registration and must be supported by appropriate evidence, usually from the child's primary school.
  • Arrangements are considered individually against SEAG's published criteria.
  • Apply as early as possible, as evidence can take time to gather.

Full details and the application process are available on the official SEAG website's Access Arrangements guide.

FAQs

Common questions from parents

What is the Transfer Test?

It's the standardised Entrance Assessment used by academically selective post-primary schools in Northern Ireland to help decide admissions. It's administered by SEAG and taken by pupils in their final year of primary school (P7).

When should my child start preparing?

Many families begin gentle, regular practice in P6. Starting early keeps things calm — short, frequent sessions are far more effective (and less stressful) than intensive cramming close to the test.

What subjects are assessed?

English and Maths, based on the Northern Ireland primary curriculum. TransferNI covers both, broken down into clear topics.

Is there a fee to sit the assessment?

SEAG charges a registration fee, and a waiver is available for families entitled to Free School Meals (FSME). TransferNI is a separate practice tool — you can start practising for free.

Is TransferNI part of SEAG?

No. TransferNI is an independent practice and revision tool. We are not affiliated with or endorsed by SEAG. For official registration and guidance, always use the official SEAG website.

How are results reported?

As a standardised score that is adjusted for your child's age within the school year, so all pupils are assessed fairly regardless of birth month.
